The runners gradually slow down as they finish the brief 400 interval. Their breaths are a little heavier than usual and a few have broken a sweat, but they are not winded. This is the tapering period the runners have been anticipating all year. Only those running in the North Dakota high school state cross country championship meet remain. But, a few of these runners have yet to escape the confines of middle school.

Eighth graders Lindsey Werner, Kaydee Wescom and Carl Reis will represent Legacy in Saturday’s big race. All three of the runners earned All-WDA honors for the results they put up during the middle school seasons. Werner placed 5th at the high school 3k  the Missouri River classic and Wescom was 15th. Reis placed 31st in the boys division.

Werner and Wescom will likely be Legacy’s one and two runners at the state meet followed by Legacy High School runners Patty Brodie and Rachel Johanson. Reis will compete with Legacy runners Alex Anderson, Carter Scott, Taylor Toso and Cameron Wald for the 5th spot on the boys team. They are likely to be preceded by 5th ranked Legacy runners Beau Brannan, Thomas Tieszen, Jack Markle and Braden Gilbertson.
